I want to make a train reservation from Rome to Naples on Oct. 1. We will have luggage (carry on and back pack each). How soon can we make the reservation. Online? Also we would like to take the ferry from Amalfi on October 2 To Positano or Capri. Will there be limited ferry departures since that is a Sunday. Advice please..... Is it worth it to go to Capri if we must be back before dinner?
Just wondering if you have even gone to the trenitalia website ( http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en)
If you have, you could easily see that you could buy your tickets now at very good prices. Having a carryon and backback each doesn't change that, but it's good that you are traveling light. Same with ferry service. But with that, you would have to see when you are arriving in Naples and then see ferry schedules afterwards. Otherwise there are alternate means to get where you are going.
All of which you can easily accomplish by going to the various websites.
In the time it took you to pose your question here, you could have been on the trenitalia website and purchased your tickets.
About Capri, again. how could anyone answer that question when do you have dinner?.. However, maybe your solution is to have a late dinner at 9 or 10Pm, and leave for Capri early morning. Then you can do it. Even so, this is all subjective as to if it's worth it. What is it that you want to do?
Yes, I looked at the site and I was confused. So I looked at Ricks page and I am thinking of buying through him even if it costs more. The ferry page does show plenty of departures for Sunday. Have to be back at Amalfi at 5 pm so don't know of Capri is worth it.
Seems you already have your answer if you're confused, but you might want to go back and take your time and try again.
Just don't purchase if you aren't sure of the train and the time and the date. Just the other day someone bought tickets on the wrong date and asked for advice here afterwards, so it can be confusing if you're not careful.
However, if you take your time or have someone help you (you said we) maybe the both of you can do it. But if you feel more comfortable paying additional fees, yes you can go to 3rd party sites if you want that security. Rail Europe is another one.
As for Capri, if that's your only day and time to go and you would rather see something of Capri than nothing and not go, Then you can make that decission. If you think you will regret not going, then go. I don't think you will regret seeing something of it, if even for a few hours. Still, you should take the earliest ferry so you have at least sometime there. .
If either rail web site seems to work better for you than the other, then there's not a big difference between €25 and $31 for the cheapest advance-discount tickets on the fastest train between Rome and Naples. Our Rail Europe link will add an $8 handling fee per order (not per person or ticket).
Most people who day-trip to Capri do intend to return to their home base for dinner. You can get an early start and see part of the island, probably not everything. Try www.capritourism.com for ferry schedules, but reconfirm them locally at a Tourist Info office and ferry docks as you go. Schedules can also be affected by weather, such as high winds. Or if you choose Positano, then you have the option of either bus or ferry for your return.
