Train from Rome to Naples

Is it necessary to make a reservation and purchase a ticket in advance for the train from Rome to Naples and from Naples to Sorrento? Given the frequency of departures I was assuming that I can just go to the station and buy a ticket.
Thanks for the help

you have to do that for the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. No advance tickets are sold.

You can do that for Rome to Naples if you don't mind paying full price.

Month and year? Do you want a 3-hour train or a 1-hour train to Naples? Is your schedule firm enough to buy a non-refundable advance-discount ticket? Or do you need flexibility?

The Circumvesuviana commuter (read "metro" or "subway") train from Naples to Sorrento has a schedule, but not as reliable as long-distance trains. It is gritty and crowded and hot. It does not sell advance tickets, but most tickets for it are not dated (like the ones you will buy at the newsstand in Sorrento to return to Rome, maybe.) You validate them in a machine on the platform before you board a train. There is a real booth with a live agent in Naples, but most of the other Circumvesuviana stations are unstaffed.

You can buy on the spot. No need for reservations unless you want to travel on a fast train at a discount. But if you don’t care to pay full price and you want to be flexible on when you want to travel, then just buy when you get to the station.

Be aware that trains from Rome to Naples can be very fast Freccia, quite fast Intercity, slower Regionali. Price is indirectly proportional to speed.
