Are chances very good that we can purchase the required reservation just as we reach Termini on the same day to catch a train from Rome termini to Naples Centrale station? We would like to wait until we reach Rome to buy the tickets on the same day, rather than order them here in the US We depart the US in 5 days, so time frame is tight.

Catherine, you certainly can do that. You can familiarize yourself with the schedule in advance (i.e. fast trains, regionale trains, prices) on trenitalia.com to anticipate your travel time and the cost for your different options.

catherine, you'll well be able to purchase tix the same day. its ez too. not to worry..just plan your trip accordingly and dont worry about tix until your ready to go to naples. the rail system in italy is extensive and pretty ez to navigate. itll take maybe 2.5 hours to get there or so. there are a couple of different trains you can take..the euro style 'veloce' which might be a lil more money but will get you there fast (2.5 hours roughly maybe less) or the slower inter-city style trains which are cheaper but longer. your choice. hope this helps..
