Train from Rome to Montepulciano

Seeking info for train from Rome to Montepulciano and then car rental information upon arrival in Montepulciano. Traveling in May 2023 if this makes a difference. I did visit the website https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html but unsure what to select for departure city. Thanks!

The Montepulciano train station is a ways outside of town, requires a cab or bus from there

But there is no car rental agency in Montepulciano anyway so best plan is to train from Rome to either Orvieto or Chiusi and pick up car there.

Orvieto only has Hertz and AutoEurope no longer works with that location so I’d choose Chiusi
(It’s closer to Montepulciano as well)

Be sure to check open/closed days/times of the car agency

Make sure all drivers have an IDP-International Driving Permit-obtained at your local AAA
( if you are in USA)

Roma Termini is the station you will want for departure from Rome

Chiusi-Chianciano-Terme

In 2019 we took train to Chiusi where we rented a car and drove to Montepulciano. Very easy as many car rental offices are across the street from train station. We spent 3 nights in Montepulciano and drove around Tuscany each day. A pleasant experience. Returned car in Chiusi and took train to next destination, which in our case was Florence.

Roma Termini is the station you want if you are staying close to Roma Termini. Many trains from Rome to Chiusi Chianciano Terme either stop at Roma Tiburtina or depart from Roma Tiburtina bypassing Termini.

Bear in mind that you won't see "Rome" written anywhere in Italian stations, you'd better memorize italian city names now and not inside crowded, unfamiliar environment.

Roma Tiburtina is a short 15 minute taxi ride from central Rome.

A couple of additional questions.

  1. Suggested websites for car rental in Chiusi and recommended car rental companies you have had a good experience with (Avis?)
  2. We will pick up the car on a Thursday and intended on dropping off on Sunday when he leave and take a train to Florence, but I see most car rental places are closed on Sundays, correct?

We always book our cars thru
www.AutoEurope.com

Yes
Almost if not all rental agencies will be closed on Sunday except places like Florence airport and train station

Be sure to check hours in Chiusi
Agencies close for few hours mid day and close at noon on Saturday

All drivers must have an IDP
Do your homework regarding driving in Italy

Avis-Budget is the only option available in Chiusi currently. Europcar and Hertz closed their agencies there after the pandemic.

The Avis-Budget office in Chiusi closes Sat. afternoon and Sunday all day. If you return it on Sunday the only option is to return it in Florence at either the office downtown (Borgo Ognissanti), however that Avis office closes at 1pm on Sunday, or at the Florence Airport (open till 11pm).
