We need a train from Rome to Bari on June 27th ( Thursday) in the morning - to arrive @ Bari around 4/5. We tried to book online but get the failure response of: you need to book within Italy. So internationals do not seem to be able to book this route. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks!
I booked reservations on the fast train to Bari from Rome a few months ago for our trip this month. I used this website: http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD Paid for and got electronic tickets. I have printed out the receipt to take with me, and I have the information stored in my email folder on my phone for review when we board and the conductor comes for tickets.
There seem to be early morning (depart 8:15 or so, arrive in Bari at around 2pm) or late afternoon trains ranging from 29 euro to 54 euro. Are you using trenitalia.com?
The train takes around 4 hours, but you can fly in about an hour for 55E on Alitalia. Perhaps even less if a discount carrier serves the route. Whether it is worth it depends on how much luggage you'll bring, how much a hassle it is to get to the airport in Rome, etc. But it may be a better option than the train for some people.
Some of the Trenitalia train tickets to be bought online have not loaded yet, as they are just finishing up all the new schedules for the year. Look at www.slowtrav.com; in their Italy Forum; for an in depth explanation of it all. I just was able to buy online my Bari-Rome tickets for June 11th only the other day, after looking for months. Late June may not be up yet; so keep looking everyday. And yes , anyone can buy online Trenitalia tickets, I've been doing it for years. Plus you save money that way! www.trenitalia.com; and change to English at the top right side of the page.
Good luck.
Thank you VERY much everyone for the helpful replies!
