Train from Rome Fiumicino airport to Florence

On the day of our arrival we are planning to take the high-speed Alta Velocità (AV) train from Rome Fiumicino airport to Florence . If anyone has taken one of the twice daily trains, are reservations required or recommended? We might be able to catch the earlier train, but if we need a reservation we will take the later one to be safe. Thanks!

Hi Dave. There are several high speed trains per hour from the central Rome station (Roma Termini) to the main Florence station (Firenza SMN). Since hard to predict when you will clear airport, best approach is to take the Leonardo Express local train (open seating, no reserved seats) from airport to Roma Termini, and then change to fast train from there to Florence. You can buy ticket at airport, seat reservation for Rome to Florence will be included, and there is huge capacity so these trains virtually never sell out. For train schedules and prices, see trenitalia.com. Buying at last minute, you will pay the 'base' fare price. Airport station name is Fiumicino Aeroporto. Have a great trip!

Don't assume there are always direct trains. For example, I have checked a couple random dates (next Dec. 16th and Jan. 16th) and there are no direct trains, all the travel solutions are with a change at Termini.
In any case all fast trains require a reservation.
