train from rome airport

Ok So Ive decided to get the regional train FM1 from airport to Ostiense the blog says but when I look up Metro lines cant see anything except Piramide. We are staying at Hotel Romance near The Colosseum. Should we change trains at Piramide and get blue line to Colosseo then a taxi to hotel?? Im exhausted already..Liz

You won't see the regular train routes on the metro map. The two stations are right next to each other so go to Ostiense and change to the piramide metro. Once at the colosseum it will depend on how far away the hotel is as to if you should get a taxi or just walk. donna

It's the FR1 Liz, and you have it right: debark at Ostiense/Porta S. Paolo/Piramide, and change to a Blue Line Metro direction Rebbibia or Conca 'Oro. Go two stops to Colosseo. This is a great overview and reference http://www.atac.roma.it/files/doc.asp?r=4. Google says you can walk to your hotel from the Metro in 8 minutes. Just plug in walking directions and print a map.

It looks like you've figured out the most inexpensive option - but I'm not sure it's the quickest. Looks like it takes 32 minutes for the train from Fiumicino to Roma Ostiense. From there you will wait for a metro train, then take it two stops. Then you will take a cab. On the other hand, you could get on the easy Leonardo Express train (€14), which takes you to Roma Termini in the same amount of time (30-35 minutes). Then you could simply get in a cab from Termini to your hotel. Yes, the cab ride would be slightly longer and cost a bit more. But overall, it seems to me that this would be the simplest/quickest way of getting to your hotel - least amount of hassle. Let's say the cab would cost roughly €10 - so if there are two of you you're looking, with this option, at €14 each for the train plus €5 each for the cab, €19 total - and the result is a trip with only two stops. Or.... for €24 each, assuming 2 people (so €48 total) you could just take a cab directly from the airport to your hotel, and it would be even smoother. Overall the monetary amounts for the more convenient/smoother options are not much higher, and for me it is worth it to spend a bit more and have an easier time of it, especially after a very long flight. Just my €0.02...

Fear not, Liz. The "huge train station at Rome" is part of the fun of traveling to Rome, imho. It's very well laid out and easy to understand. You might also check with your hotel and see how much their shuttle service from the airport is. I see from their website that they have one, but it doesn't have any more info there. Happy travels.

Liz, "Was probably just trying to evade the huge train station at Rome eekk!!" Actually, Roma Termini isn't that bad, but as with anywhere else in Europe you'll need to be wary of pickpockets and scammers. Especially over the last few years, I've noticed an increased Police presence there, with a variety of Police agencies. It IS a busy station but I always enjoy travelling through there. One of my "traditions" over the last few years is to get a Coffee (or whatever) at McDonald's when I first arrive, and go up to their dining room on the second floor and just watch the "human performance" below. It's nice to stop for a few minutes to remind myself, "I'm actually in Rome!". BTW, I'm quite looking forward to the new Woody Allen movie To Rome With Love. Unfortunately it doesn't open here until July 20th. "as Sorrento doesnt sound that good" Could you provide further information on what you've heard? Sorrento is fantastic!!! Using the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Herculaneum is probably the easiest and simplest method. Are you planning to haul your luggage with you while you're visiting the site? I don't know if there would be sufficient time for a tour there and then catch the Ferry to Procida? IMO, it would be much easier to stay a night or two in Sorrento, visit Ercolano or Pompeii and then travel from there to Procida. It's unusual that you've chosen a visit to Procida, as that's a bit "off the radar" for most tourists. The Proffesore of my last Italian language class here is from Procida. Cheers!

Thank you all for helpful replies. Every blog/site/travel/ always on about pick pockets and Naples seems the worst. Should we get the train there to go to Herculaneum?? Would we have time to do herculaneum then return and get fast ferry to Procida Island as Sorrento doesnt sound that good and positano further on. Help much appreciated. cheers Liz

(You're changing topics, so you might want to start a new one.) What do you mean by "Sorrento doesn't sound that good"? We absolutely loved it, as do most people who go there. As for the Circumvesuviana train, pickpockets are only a problem if you really let your guard down.

Michael and Ken appreciate your input Sorry for jumping to new topic. You know when your planning trips your mind is everywhere lol!! Re Sorrento not 100% but read on Rick Steves site about walks I think (Not much to do there my audio guide takes all but an hour) so go to Positano.
As to Procida stumbled upon a photo and went. Prefer places that everyone else hasnt seen . Looks stunning and untouched. As does Ischia too. Think we will have to return hire a motorhome and just tour slowly. regards from down under

Hi No hauling luggage to Herculaneum. We are docking for the day in Naples off a cruise ship. Going there instead of Pompeii.
