Train from Positano to Sienna or Florence

Planning to return to Italy in May and going from Positano to Sienna or Florence on Saturday, 13 May depending on when rental car company is open. Having trouble understanding train companies. Rick's book talks about Trenitalia and Italo. I see schedules as well as for Rail Europe. Should we go to Naples or another city for train and which train.

Positano has zero train service. The closest train is in Sorrento, and it is not the main-line Trenitalia, it is the "commuter" Circumvesuviana (CV) to Naples. In Naples, you take the escalator upstairs and get on the main-line trains. The CV sells tickets like a metro or subway. The Trenitalia tickets can be much cheaper bought three months in advance, non-changeable, non-refundable.

You could go from Positano to Naples, either by taxi or private car (if you can afford it) or by a combination of bus and commuter train, then take the high speed train (either Trenitalia or Italo) from Naples to Florence. If you are going on to Siena, you would get there by by bus or by train, and then take a cab to the rental car company office.

If the ferries are running (and I think they usually start running around Easter), you could also take a ferry from Positano to Salerno, and then a high speed train (Trenitalia or Italo) to Florence. We took this route in the opposite direction and highly recommend it. However, if you have inclement weather, the ferries might not run, and then you are stuck with a long bus ride to Salerno.
