Can I buy train tickets in advance from Pisa to Monterosso? Also, how would I go about doing that? I tried putting in pisa to la spezia and it cam e up n/a. do i choose spezia, centrale or migliarina? Also, is there only one airport Pisa and can I catch the train from there? Thanks!
Anica, You may be able to pre-buy some of the tickets for the trip from Pisa Airport to Monterosso. However, I wouldn't bother as it's just as easy to buy them at the airport when you arrive, either from a Kiosk or staffed ticket office. Some of the trains on that route will be Regionale, so there's no benefit to pre-purchase and that may not even be possible (that's likely why you're seeing "N/A" when you try to purchase). There is a station right at PSA, which is convenient. The specifics of the trains you'll need will depend on which train you can connect with. What time does your flight arrive? For example, one of the quickest trips is a departure from PSA at 11:18, arriving Monterosso at 12:54 (time 1H:36M, one change at Pisa Centrale). The first leg on that trip will be via Regionale (DON'T forget to validate!) and from Pisa Centrale to Monterosso via Intercity (reservation compulsory, which will be included with your ticket). There are lots of trains operating on that route, and some will have an additional change at La Spezia Centrale. Which one you'll be able to connect with will depend on your flight arrival time. Happy travels!
Ken, We arrive the night of April 4th. We will sleep in Pisa, and travel the next afternoon. Returning on the 9th for our evening flight out of Pisa. We will be staying in vernazza. Do train ticket prices increase the closer in date you get?
Hi Anica. To see the schedules, use site trenitalia.com, don't enter La Spezia; use stations Pisa Centrale and Monterosso. But there is no reason to buy in advance. The price will only vary by a couple of euros no matter how / when you buy, so easiest to just buy at your convenience in Italy. Enjoy your trip!
Anica, Thanks for the additional details. That's a very easy trip, and this is the method I'd use: > Apr. 4 - take train from Airport to Pisa Centrale - when you arrive there, buy tickets for your trip to Vernazza on Friday afternoon (fares are currently ~€11.90 each way). For an afternoon trip, I'd probably use the departure at 12:52, arriving Vernazza at 14:28 (time 1H:36M, one change at La Spezia Centrale). One segment is via InterCity and the other by Regionale. If you're issued two tickets, I'd probably validate both of them before boarding on the day of travel. > Apr. 5 - Take train to Vernazza. On that run, there's about a 23 minute layover in La Spezia Centrale. When you arrive in Vernazza, it may take you a few minutes to get down the stairs to the main street, depending on how many people disembark at the time (when I was there in September, the crowds were HUGE, and it took me at least 10 minutes to even get off the station platform - that shouldn't be the case in April). Buon Viaggio!
Just buy there tickets when you're there. The ticketing machines are very easy to use for checking departing times and buying tickets, and there are trains heading up from m.rosso to Pisa relatively frequently. There might be an intercity (IC) train that will stop in m.rosso and go to Pisa with less stops in between as well. Those are about 30-60 mins faster between the two towns compared to the regionale trains but will cost a little more.
