We are taking the train from Paris to Rome in July with 3 kids (10, 13,14). I'd like to stop somewhere (2-3 days) before Rome. I love the looks of CT, but think the family might only like it as a day trip. Any suggestions? Thanks

How about Paris-Milano-Varenna (Lake Como), then to Rome thru Milano. Another option would be Paris-Nice, then Nice-Rome (a long day). On Lake Como you could all explore around the lake by the frequent ferry system. In Nice, there are things to see and do in the city and many side-trips available.
