Train from Ostia to Civitavecchia

I would appreciate your help with two strategies. I need to get either from Ostia or Rome to the port of Civitavecchia for a cruise. We are arriving at the port a day early and are giving ourselves that day (Nov 2) to make the journey. I understand there is not direct train from Ostia to Civitavecchia.

  1. Stay in Ostia two nights (Oct 31 and Nov 1). On Nov 2, take the train (with luggage) from Ostia to Rome and transfer to the train that goes to Civitavecchia. We would take the regional train in Ostia to Ostia Antica on Nov 1 (we've done this before, easy peasy.)

  2. Take train from FCO to a station near Ostiense on Oct 31. Visit Ostia Antica on the train Nov 1 RT. On Nov 2, take a train from Rome to Civitavecchia.

Questions: do the train stations have lifts/elevators? We can do stairs, but dragging our luggage upstairs is a different story. Can you recommend the specific train lines for these ventures? Is one strategy a lot easier than the other? We've been to Rome several times and want to see more of Ostia Antica. I also know the Leonardo Express service ends Nov 1.

Thank you.

How much luggage will you have?

First, the easy answer. The train from Rome to Civit... is basically a commuter run -- three to four an hour taking from 45 mins to an hour 15 depending on the train. Leaves Termini. Termini for trains is one level with the metro (subway) being on the lower level. The train station in Civit... is very close to the port entrance. You probably will see you ship when you get off the train. Termini has elevators.

I am confused about the rest of your plan. Ostia Antica is a park so I would stay in Rome and do OA as a day trip. I think that is you number 2 option. That would be easier. The park, at best, is a half day activity.

And have no idea what you mean by the LE service ends Nov 1. The airport is not going out of business on the 1st.

Thank you for your advice. I meant the Civitavecchia Express Train stops on Nov 1, not the Leonardo. We originally wer just going to take a taxi to Ostia and stay there two nights, but now it seems basing ourselves in Rome is a better idea.

The Civit.... Express is not for you. Runs the wrong direction at the wrong time. It is designed to take cruise ship passengers at 9am to Ostiense (Rome) and return them late afternoon to the cruise ships. It runs from Civit to Rome and back. And the train station Ostiense is not in the most convenient location in central Rome. It is south of Trastevere. Termini is in a better location. You want the regular train service. I am a little curious about you interest in Ostia and the plan to spend a couple of nights there. It is mostly a beach town with little else going for it. The park is nice -- cool with trees but half day is about it. We always stay in the Termini area for the convenience to local transit. We have boarded four cruises out of Civit... plus a couple of port stops on other cruises. It is easy to do.

Some trains from Rome to Civitavecchia also stop at other Rome stations than Termini, in case that suits your hotel location and schedule.

Civitavecchia station doesn't need an elevator. Note that the city bus from the station to the port's own shuttle bus circle (you can't walk onto the piers) can't fit a whole trainload of people. (That is, it's a two-seat trip from the Civit. Station to the gangplank.) Rick has printed walking instructions, but I found them hard to follow, and it's hot and bumpy for luggage wheels.

Make sure you get on the port bus designated for your ship.
