We are dropping our rental car off in Orvieto Sept 17th (Sunday) and wonder what is the best plan for taking the train to Positano. I have read that a train goes from Orvieto to Salerno and then a ferry to Positano. Is this so and is it a good bet for a Sunday.
We have also considered taking the train from Orvieto to Naples and getting a private transport to Positano. For a Sunday, what is the best choice?

ruth, There are several travel methods you could use on that route, but regardless of which one you choose, that trip is likely going to take the better part of a day. The method I'd use from Orvieto to Positano: > Train from Orvieto to Napoli Centrale (probably one change at Roma Termini) > Circumvesuviana (train) from Napoli to Sorrento > Bus, Boat or private driver from Sorrento to Positano. For travel on a Sunday, a private driver might be the best option (if your budget will allow). There are reliable drivers listed in the Guidebook. I haven't checked Ferry or Bus times, but the frequency of trips may be reduced on a Sunday. Happy travels!
