Train from Orvieto-Assisi-Florence

On Sept. 19 I'll be traveling in Italy from Orvieto to Assisi by train. My question: Does the Assisi train station have storage facilities/lockers for luggage? I'll be going on to Florence later that day, and need a place to stow my luggage. Also, should I buy these train tickets far in advance, or is the previous day OK? Thanks! Jo

The Assisi station does indeed have a baggage deposit, as you can see here. (Scroll down.) Are you aware that the Orvieto-Assisi train route requires you to change trains once or twice? And there aren't a lot of times to pick from. Your best bet looks to be the 8:04 from Orvieto, arriving in Assisi at 10:44. You'll change trains once, in Terontola-Cortona. Because it's a Regionale Veloce train, you can't buy the tickets more than a week in advance. BTW, the train actually drops you off in Santa Maria Maggiore (sometimes referred to as "Lower Assisi"). You'll then need to take the bus or a cab up to Assisi proper. The cabs are VERY expensive. IMHO, this is going to be a tough fit because neither Orvieto nor Assisi are major transit hubs. You may be frustrated at the little time you end up having in Assisi. Any chance you could spend the night there? It's stunningly beautiful in the evening, and well worth the effort to do so. FWIW, here are some pics from our trip to Assisi in May 2008.
