A couple months ago I took a train from Sicily to Florence on Trenitalia. It was confusing trying to book it online, so I went to the train station a couple days before and was able to book my ticket. I also got a much cheaper price than doing it online. There are a lot of travel agents in Italy and they can do the same thing for you if you don't want to go to the train station. Good luck!
