We are considering either staying in Tropea in Calabria or in Castiglioncello in the summer. If we goto Calabria we will probably have to fly to Naples. Can anyone advise on the journey down to Calabria - would it be best to drive (maybe stopping overnight somewhere) or has anyone done that train journey? Any help would be appreciated.

The route you want is Napoli Centrale to Lamezia Terme to Tropea.It takes about six hours by train, including waiting time at transfer points. There are other routes with additional changes, but this is the most direct. I spent three days in Tropea last summer, loved it.
