Train from Naples to Rome

Hi, We are going on a cruise in June 2025, docking in Naples and flying out of Rome the next day. I'm wondering how easy it is to take the train from Naples to Rome the day before our flight? Is this something I have to book in advance, how long is the ride, and the trip? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Travelling by train is trivial really. You obtain a ticket, either at the station or on line, then board a train and travel.

There is no requirement to buy tickets in advance. Doing so however does give you a discount. There are two companies operating the Naples to Rome route. One way to book is to use theTrainline.com, where you will see departure times and prices for both of them.

If you have not taken a train in Europe before, you may wish to look at our host's free travel advice, top left:

(Don't be distracted by the discussion of Railpasses, which is not relevant to your needs.

When I will be in Italy, I use the national rail site to buy tickets, not a third-party company that claims to make it easier. If you look at https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains , you will see that trains from Naples to Rome take from 1 to 3 hours. That makes the answer to your question "fuzzy". You don't need to reserve conventional trains in advance, but the Frecciarossa (1:10 or so trip) is fully-reserved and assigned seating, and is priced like airfare. That is, cheaper in advance, but not put on sale too far ahead. And most discounted fares are non-changeable (one specific train only) and non-refundable. The longest duration train tickets are good on any train that day.

That said, some people on this newsboard buy all their train tickets on DB, the German rail company.

When we got to Naples from Sorrento, even though there were full-fare, walkup tickets available for this higher-speed route, we were refused [no extra cost] boarding with our tickets for the "previous" train, and decided to wait for our advance-purchase, discounted departure, an hour later.

Other than saving money, there is no reason not to take the faster train Naples-Rome.

You want to learn how to do this now, while you are at home. You might get sick, or have a family member get sick, or have some other reason for making a change while you are traveling. And a third-party company makes any changes whatsoever complicated or unachievable.

Hi, took the train from Naples to Rome last June. We booked it a few days in advance online, I'd recommend you to do the same just to be safe. I think it only took about 1-1.5 hours. A pleasant ride, nothing to worry about.

You can actually buy Italian tickets on DB now, and you can buy french tickets as well. I recently bought a ticket Basel - Luxembourg on the DB site because SNCF was unable to sell me that (Even though trip is entirely on French trains). The DB site is getting better, and might one day be a good one-stop-shop for train tickets in all of Europe.

The reason I suggested trainline however is for two reasons:
- Trainline can deal with English versions of place names. That makes it easier for tourists to deal with.
- There are two companies operating that route, and they are both shown on trainline, so you do not need to deal with two different websites to compare.

The cruise dock is about 3 km frm the train station. You could take a taxi or bus if you don’t want to walk. The
train from the Rome Termini, the Leonardo Express, to the airport takes about an hour.

We go to Napoli every year for Christmas and always take the train back to Rome to fly home the day OF our flight. Leave Napoli Centrale at 8:30AM, get to Roma Termini at about 9:45AM. Hop on the Leonardo Express and arrive at FCO at 10:30AM. Breeze through baggage check, security, immigration and lots of time to kill before our 1PM flight home (we live in Atlanta, so the direct FCO-ATL on Delta is so nice).

I buy our train tickets as soon as they go on sale, about three months in advance. They are usually around 20 euros on Italo, about half the price of Trenitalia.

hey hey joellendixon
you shouldn't really have any issues with the train, AbbyO says look at italotreno.com for cheaper cost.
other things to think about:
what time & date is your flight back, do you have a hotel booked for rome (book ASAP) it is high season summer, many cruises leaving or arriving in rome, and jubilee 2025 (holy pilgrimage) expecting millions from all over the world having booked from last year, leave cruise ship later than everybody that's rushing & in a hurry, take a cab to train station, since check in to hotels are 2-4pm or ask for early check in or drop off bags. talk a roam around, have dinner. transportation to FCO airport give yourself time to pack up, shower, check out (10-11am), get to train for 35+ minute ride, check in bags, go thru immigration/passport, better early than late, if time get breakfast/lunch then sit in gate area. sometimes we've picked up sandwich (train station or airport) for that long flight home flight.
enjoy your cruise & have a great time
