Train from Naples to Rome

Hi All,
Quick question. Do we need to book train tickets in advance traveling from Naples to Rome in mid September?
Thanks in advance,
Rob in Toronto

No. Italian train rarely if ever sell out. The only reason to book early is to take advantage of discount fares.

Another reason would be to avoid the lines and chaos at ticket kiosks, but only if you can get a much cheaper fare.

Aw, come on - I see a few lines at ticket windows but seldom see lines at ticket machines, much less any chaos. That is a little over the top.

In addition to the ticket window or automatic kiosks at the station (there are no lines at the automatic kiosks), you can also buy tickets at virtually any travel agency in Rome. There might be a small commission, but it's another option.
This is the list for the Lazio region (the city name is on the left column under "Comune", just scroll down to Roma)

There is no deadline to buy tickets, even for the fastest trains. If seats are available on "reserved" trains, then a seat is assigned whenever you buy the ticket, right up to departure time.

Better word choice might be distraction at the kiosks.

I'll just add my own experience at the Naples Centrale RR station recently. I was rushed but had enough time to get my ticket and catch my train. Used the machine at a kiosk to get my ticket for cash. The machine led me all the way through the process and then instructed me to insert payment, which I did with a 20 euro note. After quite some time, it just cancelled the transaction and spit back my 20 with no explanation. I assume the machine did not have adequate money to make change. Afraid I no longer had time to get to that train, I went to the ticket office, encountered a long line, and then needed to get a train that was both later and somewhat more expensive. Just one experience, but I wish I had purchased my ticket before getting to the station.

You can buy a ticket at anytime. If we know when we want to leave we generally buy when we arrive at the station just to avoid the situation that Larry described. The exception is Regional train tickets that we often buy days in advance since they are not train/date specific. I guess I would have tried another ticket machine before hitting the line.
