Train from Naples to Palermo

Anyone have experience with the Intercity train from Naples to Palermo? We will be staying in Sorrento so have to make our way to Naples to catch the 9:50 once-a-day train to Palermo. on June 2nd. Is the 9+hour trip worth it? Looks like an adventure to us.

Took the train last November. It was a long ride but fine overall. Was nice o be able to walk around. We took sandwiches and snacks. I enjoyed it when they put the car on the ferry and we were able to get off the train on the ferry. I was worried about becoming seasick, so glad we opted for the train. I would do it again.

For what it’s worth, several years ago, we went the opposite direction by rental car, using the car ferry between Sicily and the mainland. But it took us 3 days, although it allowed us to visit the amazing Ancient Greek ruins in Paestum, as well as getting nice stays in Castrovillari and Salerno. Cost of a car plus gas plus two nights’ lodging vs. the train? My guess is the train is cheaper. Plus, it takes less than 3 days, so is it worth it? If Paestum isn’t a priority for you, I’d say yes.

I have done this train myself. It is an old fashioned IC service, and the ferry crossing is quite interesting. Its a varied trip, with some nice scenery. Take a picnic and do not assume you will arrive on time :-)

You can also board this train in Salerno, so maybe you could arrange a transfer there.

Note that this train has two sections. The other section goes to Siracusa. Make sure you board the right one :-)
