We plan to visit Herculaneum & Pompeii from Naples and my question is regarding Circumvesuviana tickets -- can we buy a round trip ticket Naples to Pompeii if we intend to visit Herculaneum on the same trip, or must we buy a ticket to Herculaneum and then another from there to Pompeii, and finally one to return to Naples from Pompeii? This isn't clear on the website.

You can buy all the ticket you want or need at the first ticket window in Naples.

When we were in that area in 2011 we bought the Campania Tutta la Regione card. This gave us access to free entrance to many sites including Erculano and Pompeii and free transportation. You can check the link here http://www.campaniartecard.it/artecard_Regione.cfm
for more information. When we bought it I think it was for only 3 days but we managed to visit Pompeii, Erculano and the Naples Archaeology Museum and used it for our train rides. This card might be useful to you.
