Train from mxp to rental car in Tuscany

Hi. I’m flying into MXP and staying in Tuscany near Volterra. After 4 days, I’m going in chinque Terre. So my best guess is to take a train from mxp to sienna? Rent a car there, and return it back to sienna, and then take train to chinque Terre? Are those my best options? Open to suggestions 😊😊😊. If so, any suggestions on where to rent the car and how to get there from train stop?

Rent at MXP, drive to Volterra, drive from Volterra to La Spezia, park the car or turn it in, take the train to 5 Terre. Then train back to ?? the car, Florence, Pisa, or even Siena.

It is 275 miles or so to Volterra. You can go through cities like Parm, Modena, and Bologna on the way. You go right by Florence too. Autostrade all the way so it shouldn't be too bad a drive. I have run into heavy traffic around Bologna though.

Hey there. Thanks for responding. That was actually my first plan. But The reason Im considering the train from MXP to Tuscany is because I thought it would be a better fit for us in case we don’t sleep on our very long trip from Arizona. I was also looking to rent down in Tuscany so I can return it to the same place and avoid the drop off fees?? . From cinque Terre we are going on to Milan city center. Your thoughts?

avoid the drop off fees??

Usually renting one place in Italy and dropping off at another has little or no extra fees.

So your plan to train to Siena, pick up car there and drop at La Spezia should give you rest/recovery time on the train before driving and let you do a one way rental without excessive fees.

I would take the train to Florence, then rent the car in Florence and drive to Volterra. That should be your number one option, hands down, if you don’t want to drive the 4 to 5 hours from MXP.
Another alternative (an extra one hour train journey) is, once in Florence, to proceed on another train from Florence to Pisa, then once at Pisa Centrale take the people mover to the Pisa airport, rent a car at the Pisa airport, then drive to Volterra.
Volterra is almost equidistant from Florence and Pisa. From Pisa is about 10 miles closer and fewer curves, however you have to pass by Florence before reaching Pisa, therefore the overall trip is shorter if you drive from Florence.
Taking the train to Siena to go to Volterra makes no sense.

You would return the car in La Spezia, next to the Cinque Terre.
