train from Monterosso to Venice: lving soon, pls recommend

We lv for Rome in 2 days. I will figure out train options from Rome to La Spezia later. Asking advice about going from Monterosso in Cinque Terre, where we will be staying, to Venice. Should we go back south to La Spezia and take train from there to V? or can we get decent choices from Monterosso? I know it's a long ride either way.

There are a number of choices. On the Trenitalia website I found trains going north to Milan and then to Venice as well as to La Spezia to Florence to Venice. Best bet is to check the choices on Trenitalia and see what works best for you. Most itineraries show 5.5 to 6.5 hrs. We were in Monterosso the first of May. Took the train there from Milan. Our trip ended in Venice and we took ther train back to Milan from Venice. Good trip, no issues with the trains. There are 2 stations in Venice - Menstre on the mainland and Santa Lucia on the islands. Have a great time.

either way works. Monterosso has an advantage over the over villages in that it has direct trains to Milano Centrale. that means only one train change at Milano Centrale, but the total time is a bit more than routing south then north. If you go south through La spezia or Pisa, you might have three train changes. Not that big if a deal since most of the stations are small. Trenitalia will let you ticket and route the entire journey, so start at Monterosso and end at Venezia SL. See which departure and arrival times work best for you.

thanks so much! doesn't look like any clear advantage to one over the other. w go back to train site to see what to do. If anyone else has experience w this, pls weigh in!
I would like to minimize having to change trains and lug our stuff on and off several times, if possible. I will pay it forward when we get back!

Julie, if you want to minimize train changes, then go the Milan route that Ron mentioned. If you select the right train at Monterosso, you will have only one change, at Milan. The " right" one would be the IC 35066 that departs Monterosso at 10:55 for Milan. This one does not require a change at Genoa. Also, the trip up the coast is scenic. You arrive in Milan at 13:50, with ample time to catch the 14:35 ES train to Venice. This route does take a bit longer than going back through La Spezia, Pisa and Florence, but with fewer changes it is easier and more relaxing.
