We're thinking of stopping at Verona for a few hours on our way to Venice. Is it possible to do this with one train ticket or does it count as two trips? I ask because the DB Bahn site has a "via" option when searching schedules, but they don't provide prices. When I search trenitalia or raileurope, I have to do two searches...Milan to Verona, and then Verona to Venice.
Most trains from Milan to Venice are the high speed trains that require reservations, and you would need to purchase 2 tickets to stop in Verona. The 2 tickets would cost 36.00 euro compared to 30.50 euro for 1 direct ticket. There are 1 or 2 trains hourly from Verona to Venice depending on time of day, so you could just purchase your 2nd ticket when you get back to the Verona train station. You could also inquire at the Milan train station (or at a Milan travel agency) about a regional train ticket. The regional trains cost less and add about an hour of travel time, but do allow stops. Be sure to ask how long you would have to complete the trip, as you may have only 6 hours between validating your ticket and arriving in Venice and that would only allow for a short stop in Verona.
