Train from Milan to Venice

Just wondering if getting the train at MXP to Venice is easy....first time travelers and not interested in renting a car/driving. Advice or encouragement?

Thanks

Yes, very easy. You'll connect to another train to Venice at Milano Centrale. The trains are really nice, and in Italy, I wouldn't think of renting a car unless I were traveling in a rural area (e.g. Tuscany). Train to Venice is the only way to go.

The only issue is the cost of the tickets from Milano Centrale to Venice (you want Venice Santa Lucia station). If you are flying in, you have to worry about delays, so many people buy their train tickets at the last minute (otherwise, they risk missing their pre-booked train and throwing away those tickets). These tickets can be expensive unless purchased months ahead of time. Others try to build a few hours layover in in case their flight is late - and so buy tickets three months in advance online to save money. Personal preference. I'm sure a lot of us just want to get where we are going after a long flight and not camp out at a train station for an extra 2-3 hours just to save a few bucks - but up to you.

You can buy your tickets online at www.trainline.com . There are two different rail companies that operate trains between Milan and Venice: Trenitalia (the national train company) and Italo (a smaller private company). I've only taken Trenitalia, but Italo sounds like they have good service, too, and you might save a few bucks booking an Italo train.
