Train from Milan to Varenna

When arriving in Varenna how do I get to hotel from train?

Depends where your hotel is. Many are walking distance.

Ask your hotel for a suggestion, or plot it on something like google maps

I see that you can purchase a ticket from Milano Centrale to Varenna. It is a regional train and there doesn't seem to be any advantage to purchasing this in advance. If I am incorrect, I know someone will chime in.

You can buy tickets Milan Centrale to Varenna from one of the many automated machines at the Milan Centrale train station.
You can also buy online https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html
There is no need to buy the tickets in advance since that route is a commuter regional train fixed price no assigned seats.
Varenna is very small. Google Varenna Esino Train Station to wherever your hotel is and you will see how to get there

Remember that the final destination of the train (the one displayed on timetable boards) will be Tirano (or, more rarely, Sondrio). Also remember that the train stop at Varenna is very short, be ready by the train door.

Four years ago we arrived at the Milan station from the airport. We had to go out into the "lobby" of the train station and down a floor to get to the machines to buy tickets to Varenna. Make sure you know how you are going to buy tickets for departing Varenna. We went to the office the day before we left to purchase them.

We chose a hotel close to the train station in Varenna.
