Train from Milan to Marseille

I have been trying to book a Thello train from Milan Centrale to Marseille St. Charles for October 22 since July. I've tried Thello, RailEurope, and others and can't seem to book this train. Any suggestions from travelers out there?

When I check the trenitalia website for your date, it only shows 2 trains per day departing from Milano Centrale at 7:05 & 15:10.

However, when I check the Bahn.de website, there are more choices, but most of them also require more train changes.

Edit to add...

Did you see this notice about schedule changes on the Thello site pertaining to your route?

Thanks Sam! That's the same link I tried to add, why didn't it work?
I fixed it.

I'm still having the same problem. Both Trenitalia and Thello won't let me book, says the train is full, but when looking at the info it shows lots of seats both in 2nd and 1st class, and Bahn says you can't book this trip on the internet. I even tried to book a full price (not smart or go) and it won't let me book. I've emailed both Trenitalia and Thello. Thello responded "We apologize, but for the moment sales are not open for October 22th. In few time normally the problem will be resolved." I'm getting nervous because we leave for Europe on October 7 and all our subsequent hotels and trains have been booked. Has anyone run into this problem before. I did read the info that the Milan-Marseille trains are only running on Fri, Sat, & Sun in the month of October. But the train I want is on a Saturday, so that's not it.

You could also try trainline.eu (previously captaintrain.com). I did a quick check for your date and found several possibilities.

Sonjia,

I just tried to buy a ticket via the trenitalia site & didn't have any issues.
Perhaps try a different browser? I used google chrome.

I agree with Darcy, try the Trainline.eu website

Sonjia,

The Bahn.de website shows numerous departures on that route, but since the train doesn't originate in Germany, you won't be able to book tickets on that website. Forget Rail Europe as they often don't show all the possibilities.

The solution I'd use is a departure from Milano Centrale at 07:05, arriving Marseilles-St.-Charles at 15:00 (time 7H:55M, one change at Nice Ville). There's a similar departure slightly later, which changes at Geneve.

Regarding the problem with booking the tickets, how many seats are you trying to book? As several others have suggested, you might try www.trainline.eu (formerly Captain Train), as they sell tickets for both countries at the same price as the rail networks.

I checked briefly and the 07:05 departure is shown on the Trainline website, and it appears to be on sale right now (bonus)! As it's shown on their website, you should be able to book it. If you have any problems, send a note to the customer service folks, as I've always found them to be VERY helpful.

Good luck!

I really need the 15:10 from Milano Centrale to Marseille, just two tickets (husband and self). It's the Thello 159/160. Priscilla, is that the ticket you tried to buy? Yes, I am using the Chrome browser. Alternatively I could take a train from Milano Garibaldi - but the Thello train is direct and gets to Marseille sooner. I've contacted Thello, they said you couldn't book yet (???) it's only a month away and we leave for our trip on October 6th, so I wanted to get this done now.

Sonjia,

No, I tried to buy the 7:05 train, since I thought you might like to get there at 3PM instead of 10:42pm.

When I choose the train departing at 15:00, I get the same message you got regarding no seats available which does not make sense.

I'd suggest you just go on the Trainline website & book your train tickets there.
I just did a trial run on the trainline website & it looks like the train departing at 15:00 is available for the same price as the one on the trenitalia website ( 30Euro per person)

Captain Train app for iPhone is superb for trains all over Europe.
Easy. Efficient. No added charges.
First view his website: Man in Car 61.
He's a Brit who LOVES train travel and making it easy for everyone.
I traveled all over France during the Seine Floods, the terrorist attack,
and the rail/bus strike .... not one problem.
Easy to purchase train tickets "on the fly".

Thank you Priscilla, I wish we could take the 7am train, but we don't get into Milan until noon. Thank you everyone for your help, I will try the app if I can't get the Thello train before we leave. I just need to relax and pray it will happen. You travelers have been wonderful and I truly appreciate your help.

Further on this, I was able to get to the booking confirmation for this train as far as Nice, but still no go to Marseille.

Edit - And you are aware of the train from Porta Garibaldi at 14:40 getting to Marseille at 23:18 via Lyon.

Sonjia,

I'm sorry you're having a difficult time booking your train tickets.
I'd suggest you contact trenitalia or Thello during business hours (Italy time) & hopefully someone can explain why
one cannot book tickets for this route & why it keeps saying that there are no seats available.

You might just buy the Trenitalia ticket to Nice (Nizza), then buy the ticket to Marseilles.

Problem is that plan is that it looks like as far as you can get that night is Frejus (or thereabouts), then wait for the morning train to Marseille.
