Train from Milan to Innsbruck

In mid-May,we are planning to take the train from Milan to Verona, on to Bolzano, ending in Innsbruck. From my time on the Trenitalia website, it seems that each leg must be purchased separately. Has anyone done this trip with advice to offer before I start booking?
Many thanks...

Cheryl, I've never bought a TrenItalia ticket online, but what I'm seeing on the website looks as if you can buy at least Milan to Bolzano in one transaction. I think the train going on to Innsbruck is Austrian rather than Italian.

You can buy one ticket that goes to Verona (on the Frecciarossa) where you change to a EuroCity that goes through Bolzano to Innsbruck. )There are other stops, too. However, if you want to get off the train and see a bit of Verona or Bolzano, you will have to purchase each leg separately. It's 5.5 or 6 hours without layovers, so maybe not a lot of sightseeing time if you make a stop.

So you want to leave Milan in the morning, visit both Verona and Bolzano on the same day all while ending your trip in Innsbruck at night?

Never did that, don't know if i'd want to make that many stops in the same day.

Otherwise you can purchase a most of that route on the same ticket. You can purchase Milan to Bolzano (which connection in Verona) on the same ticket on Trenitalia.com. They give you connection times though and not enough to tour the city. So you need to purchase seperate tickets to get off and spend time. Note the fast train costs more so you can purchase you tickets in adnvace and save money but then you are locked into that train. If you run late getting back to Verona station your screwed and have to buy another ticket. Budget in the extra money to by day of ticket and leave your self time flexibilty.

The last portion goes to Austria so need to purchase your ticket thru Austria train OBB or you also have the option of taking a German train as Innsbruck on the Italy to Munich line. Those you can purchase on DB Bahn.

Note the last train leaving Bolzano going that direction is 21:32 (9:32pm).

It appears that I misunderstood the original question. I didn't realize Cheryl and company wanted to get off the train in Verona and Bolzano.

Trenitalia looks not very interested in running international services to/from Italy, so they run extensive services between Milan and Verona and between Verona and Bolzano. North of Bolzano, Trenitalia runs only regional trains to Brenner (and most of them are actually trains run by the Bolzano province). International long distance services between Verona-Bolzano-Innsbruck-Munich are a joint Deutsche/Bahn and Oebb (Austrian railways) venture, so they are often cheaper if bought directly from Oebb - Trenitalia, in this case, is just a reseller.
