Hi, I am having difficulty deciding which is the best way to travel by train/bus from Milan to Ortisei. Is it better to train to Bolzano or to Ponte Gardena to catch the bus to Ortisei? The train ride to both is pretty much the same, time wise, the bus from Ponte Gardena is a shorter ride, so I am thinking that would be the better option, however, I have read so many say to train to Bolzano, then catch the bus from there. Are there more buses leaving Bolzano than Ponte Gardena?
Thank you!
Keep it simple... train to Bolzano, bus 350 to Ortisei. Hourly departures.
It is up to you. The bus is exactly the same bus 350 whether you board it in Bolzano or in Ponte Gardena.
The bus no. 350 departs from the Bolzano main station and makes 25 stops before reaching Piazza San Antonio in Ortisei (the bus actually proceeds beyond Ortisei all the way to Plan de Gralba). One of those intermediate stops is Ponte Gardena Stazione (train station). Picking it up at Ponte Gardena will be faster because the train from Bolzano to Ponte Gardena is faster than the bus (17 min instead of half hour) however it also depends on the timetable. If you have to change trains in Bolzano and the bus departs first then it is faster to catch the bus in Bolzano, but if you are already on a train proceeding beyond Bolzano, then it’s faster to stay on and get off at Ponte Gardena.
Ponte Gardena is a small station where long range trains (for example, Verona to Germany) do not stop. Also, many services from south (for example, Trenitalia fast trains) end in Bolzano; so it looks to me that the time you would save, if any, would be marginal.
Either way works; I went according to the schedule that would get me to Ortisei the quickest.
In my case I missed the 350 in Bolzano and did not want to wait for the next so rode to Pointe Gardena and caught it there.
