Train from Milan airport to Florence Advice

I recently posted asking about a taxi or transfer from Milan airport to Florence. Everyone's advice was to take the train because it would be cheaper and faster. We decided this would be the best option for us. Thank you to everyone for the helpful comments.

I began investigating high speed trains to Florence from the Milan airport and I am slightly confused.

Should I book our tickets now? What if my plane is delayed? Should i wait until i get to the airport to get tickets? What if there aren't any available? Is there a station and a place to buy tickets in the airport? Some of the trains seem to take a very long time to reach Florence (7 or 8 hours). Am I doing something wrong? As always, any advice would be very appreciated. Its all so overwhelming!

Just buy your ticket when you have your luggage and get to the Milan Malpensa airport (my assumption since you did not tell us which of the two Milan airports you are arriving at) train station. They will sell you a ticket to Milano Centrale station and the connection on the next high speed train to Florence.

Go to the Trenitalia website below:

Enter
From: Malpensa Aeroporto T1
To: Firenze S.M.Novella
Choose a date this coming week
Choose a time starting from the time of landing.

You will be given several solutions. The fastest are the ones with 1 change only. There is basically one such solution every hour. The first leg is the Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale, from there you take the Frecciarossa to Florence Firenze Santa Maria Novella. The total train journey is a bit over 3 hours. By doing so you will get an idea of the available trains and the pricing. However I wouldn’t buy anything in advance since you don’t know if your plane will land on time. Just buy the tickets when you get to the Malpensa Airport train station. I know that by buying in advance you could save money, but if you miss the train you book you lose it all. Don’t worry about the availability of seats. Seats very rarely sell out, if ever.
