Train from Lucca to Rome

We will be traveling from Riomaggiore and staying one night in Lucca in Sept. The next day we need to get to Rome. We're looking for the quickest train route. Do we have to travel to Florence to get to Rome, or can we get a train for Pisa? Thanks for any help!

Trenitalia.com displays changes at Pisa and/or Florence. The fastest route is via Florence and takes 3h09. The full fare (BASE) via Florence costs 51.5 Euro per person with reserved seats between Florence and Rome.
There are discounted fares for advance purchases, but they come with restrictions.

Enter Lucca and Roma Termini and let the site show all possible solutions, the third column will tell you total travel time and number of changes. Click "show" next to the little arrow to see where and when you'll have to change.

Between Florence and Rome you could also travel with Italotreno , a private competing company that runs only high speed trains. At www.italotreno.it the full fare is called FLEXI.

Note that they are a different company from Trenitalia. If you buy a discounted, non refundable ticket from Florence to Rome and Trenitalia's Regionale from Lucca is (very) late, you can't pretend anything from Italotreno.

It looks as if most trips require a connection in Florence. There are a few with Pisa connections, but the ones I looked at seemed to take a little longer.

hey kelly I want to put in a plug for a lady that gave us a 4 hour tour in Lucca. We decided to pay for a guided visit to help get us on the right track in Lucca because our time was limited. It was great choice as Wanda pointed out things we would never have seen and she gave us meal suggestions that were great. She was a great guide and when we went there were only Wanda, my wife, and I. The price gets a bit cheaper if others want to tour at the same time. This was the best money I spent in Lucca. We traveled from the Cinque Terre to Lucca and the train trip was a breeze, I posted on your Pisa to CT spot as well. http://www.luccatours.com/ or contact Wanda direct at [email protected]
