Good morning,
I am looking into a first time vacation to Italy. Can anyone answer these questions? We will fly into Rome and take a train down to Minturno. There we are going to rent a car and travel around to see the grandparents towns. Questions: The train from L.D.V. international airport into Rome: is it easy-peasy to get tickets and navigate with our luggage? The train from downtown Rome out to Minturno, is it also easy-peasy to find/ navigate/ etc. And finally, is there a car rental place in Minturno as close to the train station as possible? Please leave all the advice you can write... details too! Thanks so much, Jean-paul
If you intend to rent a car, then Rent a car in Rome. I doubt there is any major rental car company in or near Minturno. You would need to go to Cassino or Gaeta. You'll save yourself a lot of hassle if you rent directly in Rome. Minturno is only 2 hours from Rome by car.
Are you going to Minturno directly after landing or do you plan to visit Rome for a few days first?
1. If you go straight after arrival, forget the train. Rent a car from Fiumicino airport and drive to Minturno. It's a 2 hour drive from the airport.
2. If you intend to visit Rome first, take a taxi from the airport to the Rome hotel where you stay. Then on the day you depart, rent a car from one of the two main train stations in Rome, and drive to Minturno.
Jean-Paul,
The suggestions from Roberto will undoubtedly be the easiest way to get to Minturno. However, if you do prefer to travel by train it's a very simple trip.
The first step is to take the Leonardo Express from FCO to Roma Termini. Fare is about €14 PP and the trip is about 35 minutes (with no concerns about traffic). DON'T forget to validate your ticket prior to boarding the train or you may face hefty fines which will be collected on the spot!
From Roma Termini there are numerous departures each day to Minturno-Scauri (about once an hour). The trip is about 1H:45M and again these are usually Regionale trains so you MUST validate your ticket prior to boarding the train. Fares range from about €8 - 10. Once you arrive at FCO, you can buy tickets for the entire journey at the airport rail station, either from a Kiosk or a staffed ticket office.
As this is your first trip to Italy, you may not be aware that each driver for the rental car will require the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. You can obtain an I.D.P. at any AAA office for reasonable cost. You'll also have to be careful to avoid the dreaded Zona Traffico Limitato (limited traffic) areas which are common in many towns (again, hefty fines).
Buon Viaggio!
