Going from Varenna (Lake Como) to Interlaken in Switzerland in June. We intend to buy the Swiss Travel Pass for train travel in Switzerland...but what do we buy for Italy portion of the train trip?

You have 2 options.
1). Buy a ticket from Varenna to Domodossola. You'll change trains in Milan. Take one of the EC trains that pass through Spiez, where you'll change to Interlaken. At Domo, the Swiss pass takes over. Show the Pass to the new Swiss conductor for validating.
2). Take the ferry across Lake Como to Menaggio, then bus to Lugano, Switzerland. Now you can travel on your Swiss Pass the rest of the way.
