Train from Geneva to Turin

Will be renting a car in Geneva and driving to Chamonix at the beginning of October. Then I was going to drop the car off in Turin and fly back to Paris. One problem, there is a significant fee charged for a car drop in a different country.

My other options are: Return the car in Geneva fly from Geneva to Paris & forfeit my prepaid flight from Turin to Paris. The other option that I am looking for input on is dropping the car in Geneva and taking the train to Turin & using my already booked flight from Turin to Paris.
Is the train route from Geneva to Turin scenic, and does it go thru Zermatt. I would be sacrificing an additional day in Chamonix to do this. But, I would like to see the Matterhorn on this trip. Maybe this is the way to do everything?

The train itinerary would be Geneva - Brig - Milan - Turin. Moderately scenic, but not to die for. No Matterhorn sights. In order to see the Matterhorn you would have to go to Zermatt that is in a dead valley - access only from Switzerland and no passage to Italy.

Yes, the only direct way to get from Zermatt to Italy is on skis, and then only during Winter.

Another option is to not rent a car at all, but take one of the shuttle van services from Geneva to Chamonix. Then take the train from Chamonix to Martigny and then on to Brig, then Milan, then Turin. Chamonix to Martigny will be very scenic.
