Hi all. I’m looking at travelling from Florence to Rome with a one night stay in Orvieto.
Thought this would be better than backtracking from Rome?
Would prefer the fastest route but its looking tricky from the main station in Florence…
It looks like the outskirt statuons have the faster trains ?
Have heard great things about Orvieto.
Lastly … should I be purchasing a train pass as I’ll be initially starting in Bologna- Florence - Orvieto- Rome ?Many thanks for all your advice .
Are you looking at Trenitalia.com, the site for the national railway, for your information? That’s the best place to look. I checked that and also a map - although the Firenze Rifredi station has some trains (Intercity) that are a bit faster, you would first have to get to the Firenze Rifredi station, which would entail taking a train from Firenze S. M. Novella. You may as well just take your Orvieto-bound train from Firenze S. M. Novella in the first place. Also, I don’t think you would benefit from a train pass - just buy point-to-point. If some of your train trips involve the fast (Freccia) trains, you could try buying discounted tickets well in advance, with the caveat that you would then be locked into that particular train trip - if you miss it, no refund. Anyhow, Orvieto is indeed wonderful, and spending the night (or more nights!) is a great idea.
Just take the train from the main station in Florence direct to Orvieto. That is fine! And easy !
And it’s a nice idea to stop in Orvieto between Florence and Rome, although I would prefer to stay longer than one night.
I wouldn’t bother with a train pass. It seems like everyone here recently is spending more time trying to figure out the train pass than they would spend in just buying tickets. As inbsig said, just go to Trenitalia - either online or download the app.
Just buy the fast regional train from Florence to Orvieto with the bus connection to the town center. It will get you there in 2 1/2 hours and cost only 19.40 EUR. Price is always the same. Bologna to Florence is 29 EUR for a base fare ticket, taking only 37 minutes with a Freccia train. You can get that for less if you buy an advance nonrefundable ticket. Orvieto to Rome is only 10.75 EUR with the bus and fast regional train for 10.75 EUR in 1 hour and 38 minutes.
That is a whole lot cheaper than any train pass.
When you disembark at the Orvieto train station, you then cross the street and get a very cool funicular to get up the cliff to the historic center. Your funicular ticket includes the aforementioned bus ticket. I didn’t bother with the bus - just walked into the main part of town.
