Has anyone taken the train from florence to bern? Anything you can share would be appreciated including best route, travel time, etc. Thanks!

Yes, there is really only one route: Florence --> Milan --> Brig --> Bern.
If you look it up on the relevant railway company websites ( www.trenitalia.com or www.sbb.ch ) they will give you the quickest route, which takes 5 hours 23 minutes.
You will need to change a Milano Centrale, and possibly Brig as well. When looking on the above-mentioned websites, be sure to use the correct local spelling for placenames: Firenze
