train from Florence to Assisi

I'm planning to spend a day in Assisi. Coming from Florence, how long is the trip? How many trains do I need to take?

According to the Tren Italia web site, it is about 2 hours and 30 minutes with no changes on a regional train (10 Euros standard fare). There are some options that require a change and are on a faster train for part of the trip - more expensive (15 Euros) but total time is a little over two hours. Site - www.trenitalia.com. Your schedule requiments may dictate the choice - I would chose the regional train. If you use the site, remember to use Firenze for Florence.

CLICK HERE to see a typical morning train schedule. Take the regional R train with no train changes. As Jim says, the journey takes 2.5hrs. We've done this trip. Here's a couple of hints: 1) The destination on the train will not say Assisi. If I remember correctly, it says Foligno. 2) When you get to the train station, go next door to the Tabacchi/book store and buy a roundtrip bus ticket. 3)The hills in Assisi are a bit steep and the Basilica is at the bottom. It's a hike to start at the Basilica and walk up to the tope. Therefore, go outside of the shop to the bus stop and take Line C to the top of Assisi. Then you casually walk down reserving the Basilica for the last. 4)You can't see Assisi from the train station but when it comes into view, it's unreal. 5)Being a traditional Italian town, the good restaurants are closed from 4-7. If you need to get back to Florence, you could miss a good dinner. This happened to us and we have a microwaved lasagne in the train station. Actually, it was good. We still laugh about the experience. 6)Great shops and gelato in Assisi.

Finally, for us, Assisi was the most beautiful town that we saw in Italy.
