Train from Figline to Florence

We are staying in Tuscany and wanting to go into Florence for the day. I was originally going to drive to Villa Costanza and train in from there, however, I think my better option (time wise) would be to take the train directly from Figline to Florence. Looking at tickets on Trainline.eu, I can book tickets ahead of time. Is there any advantage to doing so? Can we just show up and buy the tickets then - preferably with an open ended return or are they essentially 2 - one way tickets? I'm assuming this will drop us off in the middle of where we want to be in Florence??
Thanks

That route is served by Regional trains with no need or benefit to advance booking. Online tickets would narrow your available time window unnecessarily. You can buy roundtrip tickets in the station and just activate the first direction when you're ready to board that train, and activate the second ticket when you're ready to return. Firenze SMN station is very centrally located.

The trains between Figline and Florence are regional trains, so there's no advantage to buying your tickets ahead of time. Price is the same no matter what and regional trains cannot sell out. Note that regional train tickets are only valid for the date on the ticket and they must be validated before boarding the train. You can either buy both tickets at Figline (you'll get 2 separate tickets), or you can buy Florence ticket at Figline station and Figline ticket at Florence station. If you buy both tickets in Figline, don't validate the return ticket until you're at the Florence station and ready to return. It's an easy walk from Florence SMN station to the sights.
