Train form Rome to Naples and back

I am traveling to Rome in April for 6 nights. I would like to take a train and visit Naples one day. I am on a tight budget and am confused at all of the different trains. Which one should I take and do I book it in advance???

My husband and I did this our 1st trip in 08- we didn't book ahead, just got tix at the train stn when we were going...the only thing we didn't know was there are faster and slower trains, slower=cheaper, but may add an hour to the journey, but usually 1/3-1/2 the price..so it depends on what your time is worth - I think we went fast there and slow back - we were only 4 days into our 1st trip to Europe, and were very naive about the diff trains...

If you book ahead you can book the "mini" fares which can save you over 60%. Those fares are capacity controlled and have very limited change policies so be sure of your travel dates and times before booking them. There are several types of trains available in Italy. The faster the train the more it will cost. If you take the slower regional trains it will cost you very little money but the pay off is that the trip usually takes 2-3 times longer. If that's okay with you then this might be the train to book. You can look at schedules and fares on the trenitalia website. For the regional trains enter a date within 7 days of today. Those fares won't show farther out than that. http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD Donna
