Train-Florence to Arona/Lago Maggiore

Is this an easy route via Milan? is there a big difference between first/second class other than the price?
Any suggestions on sights to see in Arona/Angera area? thanks

Lots of express trains Florence>Milan with change to regional train to Arona. First class just bigger seats, 2&1 across vs 2&2 across in 2nd.

Not only is it an easy route, it's pretty much the only reasonable route. I would suggest taking the high-speed Frecciarossa (180mph) to Milano Porta Garibaldi (the other big Milano station) where you would transfer to Regionale train to Arona. Journey time is 3hrs 16min with the one train change. Fare is 55.60Euro one-way 2nd class. You'll be just fine with 2nd class. It's not like the airlines. You don't indicate when you will be traveling. If you can 1) nail down a specific travel date and time, and 2) you are willing to accept a non-refundable ticket, you can register with www.trenitalia.com, go online as early as 90 days out from your time of travel and buy nicely discounted tickets on the Frecciarossa from Florence to Milan. I see fares as low as 19Euro in November. You can also go through Milano Centrale, but there is the possibility of 1-2 more train changes including changes to Porta Garibaldi.
