Train Florence/Rome/Where to Buy Tickets for Museums/NYE in Rome

Hello!

We are flying into Rome and then going straight to Florence. What is our best train option from the airport? We will be returning to Rome after 4 nights spent in Florence. Do we take the same train system back? We heard it's best to not purchase tickets until the day of in case there are flight delays.

We want to see the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill. We are thinking of doing this the first day in Rome (so we'd be taking the train in the morning from Florence). Do you recommend any specific tours? We think we can get up and get the first or second train out of Florence so that we have a solid day in Rome (after checking our bags at our hotel).

Do you recommend specific tours for the Vatican and museums as well?

Lastly, we will be in Rome on New Year's Eve. We are both vegetarian (almost vegan) and heard that many restaurants serve a traditional New Year's Eve meal. This meal seems to be pretty meat-heavy. Do you know of any restaurants in Rome that will be open on New Year's Eve where we can order something vegetarian-friendly on the menu?

For trains, you can look up times and prices on the Trenitalia (Italian National Railways) site: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html
For example: Fiumicino Aeroporto to Firenze S. M. Novella
or: Firenze S. M. Novella to Roma Termini.

"We think we can get up and get the first or second train out of Florence" - first train is 06:00, arrive Roma Termini 07:43.

There is a timetable change 2nd Sunday in December. Times after that will not be available until October/November. For planning purposes, assume times will be the same as now, there is unlikely to be any significant changes.

For your arrival day, it is not a good idea to buy train tickets in advance, as you cannot predict when you will emerge from the airport. Just pay full fare when you arrive. For your return to Rome, buy early to get discount prices.

This early-entrance tour has gotten rave reviews for the Vatican/St Peter's for years, Yes, there is a benefit to getting in before the general public:

Another very good choice:

Other more economical tours are available through the Vatican itself:
