I was just on line checking times for train travel from Venice to Padova. I noticed that a 2nd class ticket is 15 Euros. The return ticket is the same price. Why is it so high for a 26 minute trip? Thanks
I just looked and the high speed train only takes 14 minutes for 15 euros. There are slower trains that take 30 minutes and cost 7 euros and there are regional trains that take 45-49 minutes and cost only 2.95 euros. You pay more for speed. If a half hour doesn't matter to you I would suggest taking the regional train for 2.95. Donna
That's a very good observation and one that a lot of people wouldn't pick up. As Donna notes, you pay for speed. And on these short hops, it just isn't worth it, imho.
Thanks for the response. I was sort of surprised at the cost. And I do understand that time is money. How did you find the 7 euro fee and the 2.95 euro fee? I can only find first and second class fares or N/A.
The trick to finding Regionale fares is that Trenitalia posts them only for the next week or so. So what you do is you figure out what day of the week you'll be traveling and then choose that same day from this week or next week. Voila - Regionale fares miraculously appear. Happy travels.
Thanks, it worked. I put in tomorrow's date and got the lower fares. I can sit on the train for 15 minutes longer to save about 10 euros.
Good for you! The other advantage to taking the Regionale is that you're more likely to meet Italians in them, rather than just other tourists.
