Train departures in Italy

Are trains listed on the departure boards by train number, gate, track number as in US train stations?

Yes in the bigger stations, Venice, Florence, etc. But we found in Florence sometimes you have to wait a while before they post. Seems they are waiting to see what track then end up bringing the train in on. When in small stations in hill country they have a paper schedule which tells which track. Usually there are only a couple tracks in those towns so pretty easy.

I agree with Bill. It's posted on the large electronic boards in the larger stations. Sonetimes in the larger stations, they don't post the platform and track numbers until 30 minutes before the train arrives but they always do. In the smaller stations, this information is posted on TV monitors. Also, there's a much smaller quantity of tracks in the smaller stations so it's much less of a problem.

There are about 30 trains a day heading to Padua from Milan.

It also helps to know the ultimate destination of your train, since that will often be displayed along with the expected departure time. For example, a train to Lucca might have the ultimate destination of Viareggio. It won't say Lucca on the display - it will say Viareggio. The paper schedules are helpful (once you find your train) to see what the last stop is before yours. They don't always announce the stops on the trains, so at the smaller stops you might arrive and not have enough time to get your bags off the train before it leaves again. Seriously.
