Any recommendations for day trips from Rome by train? Thanks. tom
Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples, Ostia Antica, Florence, Orvieto, Tivolli, Bracciano...
The list goes on and on.

Tom,
Day trips to Ostia Antica, Naples and Orvieto would be the easiest, as the travel times are relatively short. Trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento would be a LONG day trip. Do you have a preference for any of the areas mentioned so far?
We did an Assisi day trip from Rome. Left about 7:45 a.m. and returned about 8:30 p.m. Time spent on train was about 2 hours each way including the stops along the way.
All of the examples given previously are excellent choices. I like Orvieto and let me add Perugia, as well. Just one more choice to confuse you.
Buon viaggio,
RB
I second the recommendation of Orvieto. Beautiful hill town. It's a little over an hour one way by train.
You can go far more places than you might think. Florence is only 1.5 hours away on the fast train. You can go all around Tuscany and Umbria (probably only 1 town or a 2nd nearby one per day). Or down to Naples, although I think Pompeii or Sorrento would make for a day with too much train riding and not enough vacationing.
Another vote for Orvieto. It's a wonderful little town & many interesting things to do there. It's an easy train ride from Rome.
