We are traveling from geneva to Milan and need to make a connecting train to Florence.Our train gets in from Geneva at 11:30 am.Would it be safe to buy tickets for the 12:15 PM TRAIN to Florence?

Absolutely, it is not uncommon for train connections to be as tight as 10 minutes or even less. That assumes both trains are at Centrale in Milan.

I'd be fine with that timing as well, esp. if you're able to get the Florence tickets at a nice discount.

That should be fine. Just find the track number where your next train is leaving from and head right over to it. Should be no problem.
