Train, bus or ferry: Sorrento to Naples

My husband and I will have 1 large suitcase each and I am thinking the ferry is the best bet to get from Sorrento to Naples on a Saturday morning at the end of May. Any pros or cons that I should consider for each method?
Also, are taxis in Naples as corrupt as I keep hearing they are? Any tips to avoid being ripped off?

We both caught a taxi off the street and used one called by our hotel, and never had any problems if a sample size of one means anything, lol. I find knowing the expected fare can be useful. Are you headed to a hotel or the train station or the airport?

For ferries, my experiences were further south but wouldn’t have wanted to travel that way with luggage as the dockside queues were somewhat chaotic.

If you would rather do a private car, see if your hotel can get an arrangement versus a street side taxi. Be prepared to pay the driver in cash but it’s not unreasonable.

The train was crowded and uncomfortable but everyone made space for each other and their bags. I met some really neat folks each time I rode it.

That was our experience as well.

Getting to the ferry in Sorrento is quite a chore and makes the train easier. If you take the train, get there early to snag a seat. Even then the suitcase may be on your lap. We didn't take a ferry to or from Naples so I don't know how crowded it will be but the ferries to the Amalfi Coast were packed and with luggage you may be standing.

We were warned by our tour guide in Naples that the taxi drivers are corrupt. He found a taxi for us and arranged what the price would be. Be prepared for a driving experience. A car ride in Naples is like being on Mr Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyland.

In case you are interested in hiring a private driver:
I haven't used them yet but plan to: www.transferelax.com
I asked for a quote from my B&B in Naples to Sorrento and was quoted 99 Euros.
They were VERY responsive to my inquiry and I thought it was a good rate for the convenience.
The rates are inclusive of:
· rental car with chauffeur, the driving time, the driving necessary expenses, full insurance, VAT, car parking, road taxes, and fuel.
A surcharge of 15% on the given quote is required for transfer service before 7.30 a.m. and after 8.00 p.m.
All the vehicles are Mercedes and equipped with air conditioning.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Given that our hotel in Sorrento is just outside of the main area, I am going to look into hiring a driver.
