Do you think I will have difficulties traveling by train or bus on holidays? 4/25th is Italian Liberation Day and 5/1st is Labor Day. Sunday, 4/25th I am planning a day trip via train from Rome to Orvieto. Saturday, 5/1st I am planning to travel by bus or train from Lago Trasimeno to Cortona.
Travel on holidays is crowded and probably not worth it in my past experience. trains are overflowing on holidays. In smaller areas public transport, busses, etc are either not running or are sporadic. I went from Florence to Pisa on May 1st. once and there was not once single bus operating and no signage to indicate such.

Trenitalia website shows limited trains on Sun 4/25 to Orvieto from Rome. Unless I am doing something wrong, I see only two departures in the morning, one at 8:22am and one @ 10:36am. Pretty sure I am navigating this website correctly.
I thought it was because of the holiday issue but after plugging in other dates, the schedule is the same. My question is: does the Trenitalia website cover ALL trains going to a certain destination?
Thanks for your ideas. I really want to make a day trip to Orvieto but am facing the possibility of not spending that much time there. I'll be heading to Assisi from Rome the following day and was hoping to enjoy Rome a bit more before heading out to Assisi (which also has limited trains).
Linda - The Trenitalia site only shows trains over the next 60 days. For planning purposes the usual advice is to use a date within that timeframe because they don't change that much. Because of the holidays I would wait, it's not that long, until you are within 60 days and have another look.
Ok - I will wait. They had other trains listed but it noted N/A next to it. Perhaps it'll change. I did, however, plug in a date in February and the schedule was the same.
There are Sunday trains to Orvieto from Rome Tiburtina station at 8.45 and 10.45. These are Regionale trains but there is no advance booking or seat reservation available on these type of trains, that's why you see N/A.
Trains in Italy are run by Trenitalia but there are a few minor lines run by private companies. Probably the best known is the Circumvesuviana service in the Bay of Naples, one of their lines runs from Naples to Sorrento.
Linda,
You are doing something wrong. The Trenitalia site show 22 trains from Rome to Orvieto for next Sunday, 14 February. The German Rail site, which shows timetables as far ahead as early June, shows the same for 25 April.
Linda & Tim: thank you very much for clearing this up for me. I see there are numerous trains and now realize that they are not reservable in advance. I appreciate your comments and have decided not to think too much about this now. Looking forward to my first trip to Italy. The last time I was in Europe, I was 10 years old. :)
