Train/Bus combo trip from Naples to Siena

OK, I'm ready to go ahead and book tickets from Naples to Siena for this June. Someone (jules m?) had this to say the last time I explored this question:

I just double checked, and IMO, your fastest route is the high speed train from Naples to Rome Termini and then bus from Rome Tibertina (right next to the train station) to Siena.

I followed up on this, and I think he's right. I've looked at the bus straight through as well as the whole way on the train, and this one has only one change (at Tibertina) and takes the least amount of time.

I guess I want some guidance or verification here. I thought I'd have to get from Termini to Tibertina, probably on the Metro. But I just checked and there's a direct Frecciarossa from Naples at 8:09 to Tibertina, getting in at 9:42. Then there's a Flixbus leaving Tibertina at 10:15, arriving at Siena Gramsci just after 1:00.

These times are perfect for us. Does anyone see a problem here? Am I missing something? I want to go ahead and book, so I can stop thinking about this.

Thanks for being patient with me. I'm not usually a fussbudget, but for some reason this leg of our journey is bugging me.

Why not just go from Naples to Florence to Siena in 4 hrs 58 minutes? High speed train direct Naples to Florence then Regional train on to Siena from there?

Tim is correct. The advantage of the bus is that it goes to the center of town the train station a little ways out. However it's much simpler to change trains at SMN than go to the Tibertina bus station and by ticket.

N_Kingdom, I would get the bus ticket from Tibertina to Siena ahead of time.

Thanks Tim and N-K for the suggestion. I mentioned that one in an earlier thread, and at least two people suggested the train/bus combo.

I know; there's never a clear consensus, and I don't expect one. Just checking to see if I'm overlooking a potential problem.

Does anyone know offhand if there's a bar at Tibertina where we could have coffee while we wait for our bus (if that's the way we decide to go?)

Edit to add: I just checked their website; it's a full-fledged station, with lots of services. I had assumed it was a small switching or branch station. When in doubt, check it out!

Tiburtina is the Metro station and train station --- the bus station where the Flixbus departs from is near by, but not just right there when you exit the station. At least, with the exit we took, we could not see any bus station or any buses because it was up a hill on another level (i.e. it's on the street level) and across a street. We had to ask for directions to the actual bus station when we took the Flixbus from Rome to Siena a year or so ago in early April, The bus station is a big, mostly outdoor place, with lots of coach-type buses parked there.

Our Rome-to-Siena Flixbus was non-stop and dropped us off at the train station in Siena. From there, there is a long series of escalators that take you up the hill and then you walk for several minutes, passing places to eat or get coffee, until you reach the old city gate called Porta Camollia. Another quite pleasant 15 minute walk through historic Siena takes you to the Campo. You could also just take a taxi or there is probably a city bus to the center of town or to close to where you are staying.

People do stow their luggage and get on the bus, and the seats fill up, so don't wait too long to board. If your train is on time, you only have half an hour. If I were you, I would find your bus and get on it. As I recall, the bus also left early because all ticketed passengers were on board already.

The on-board toilet was broken and the station bathroom was also not available going Rome to Siena, so I had to run (literally) to a nearby coffee bar after we had boarded and before we left. Siena to Rome was just fine. The bus itself was modern, clean, comfortable, fast, and with nice views out the windows.

The Flixbus app is well worth having.

I think this is all I know! I don't think I'm a fussbudget, but I do like to know details when I am traveling.

If you’re on the high speed trains there’s always the snack car with drinks and sandwiches and other snacks for sale.

Thanks, Nancys8.. I suspect that's the way we'll go, although I'm still juggling times and prices.

I don’t understand why you’re still juggling prices and times. Are you still confused? Trenitalia lays out your exact schedule...all you have to do is press the BUY button.

Tim, I was still leaning toward the train/bus combo, and wanted to compare prices. I also wanted to consider the different departure and arrival times.

We have decided to take the train the whole way, frecciarossa to Florence, then regionale to Siena. I'll do that this morning.

Thanks for your help.

That part's done. Now, let's see... Siena to Bologna, Bologna to FCO. I'll get there - but not today. :-)
