four active over 70's want to catch train from Venice to Vienna . Day trip to view scenery. Any tips please.
You want the Eurocity train from Munich to Venice, which you can pick up at Innsbruck. A long day on the train (close to 10 hours), but a wonderful trip.
The trustworthy Man in Seat 61 gives you all the practical details (look for Option 3: via the Brenner Pass).
There is a Eurocity direct train at 15:55 that gets you there in 7 hours and 40 minutes, but you will lose daylight about 5 hours in. Alternative is to take the OEBB bus from Trochetto Bus station to Villach, Austria, then switch to the Railjet train to Vienna. That leaves at 8:20 and 10:20 and gets you to Vienna in 8 hours and 15 Minutes.
You will want trains on the Brenner route between Verona and Innsbruck through the Dolomites.

It makes for a long day but it beats the direct night train without heating that I took one November night many years ago.
Sorry: I got the route in the wrong direction. But it's still a marvellous trip.
I did this in reverse a few years ago, a long day on trains and a bus, but great scenery. It was May and as we got near Villach, it snowed.

Thanks so much for info in replies.
Christi presumably you have to change trains 3 times?
Liz
No. Just twice, at Verona and Innsbruck.
consider spending a night in Innsbruck to break it up - what a lovely town!!
You can also book with a "stopover" in Innsbruck for a few hours to have lunch and a look around then continue on to Vienna.
I live in Austria, near Vienna, and go to Venice by train once in a while. It's so easy. I'd also recommend the direct train: 15:55 from Venezia S. Lucia, arriving at Wien Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) at 23:35 (train # is EC [Eurocity] 30). If you are traveling in the summer, you'll get a lot of daylight still during that journey.
By the way, if there are any concerns with that late arrival time in Vienna, public transport should still be running, or even better, make life simpler and grab a taxi right outside the station. Alternately, there are several of hotels within walking distance of the Hauptbahnhof. I'm just mentioning this because I know that arriving after 11:00pm in cities can be a bit weird for some travel plans.
Or opt for the direct NIGHT train, leaving Venezia S. Lucia at 21:04, arriving Wien Hbf at 7:55 (train # is EN [Euronight] 236), you can reserve a four-person sleeper car, which is not horribly expensive per person, considering it covers travel, sleeping options and small breakfast.
Further info. on the Austrian Railways (ÖBB) site: www.oebb.at
Obviously there are other options per the above suggestions if you'd like to break up your trip elsewhere, etc.
The last thing I would recommend is to always check the ÖBB website for any changes (delays, construction, etc.) to a scheduled train route.
Good luck and happy planning!
