I have 2 questions: #1Has anyone taken an overnight train from Venice to Rome/cost? #2Can you give me a website to do this or should I wait to get there? Traveling in Oct. 08
The normal day train takes 4.5hrs. If you want the night train, there are a couple of choices. But, you can't book them on Trentialia. You'll have to book them on Raileurope or Italiarail. It will cost you more but you really need to book night trains as soon as they become bookable (60 days out in Italy) as they fill up.
The only night train with no changes departs Venezia Santa Lucia at 23:30. The trip takes 7.5hrs. There is a 2.5hr stop in Bologna but you don't change trains. Also, the train does not terminate at Rome Termini. Instead, it terminates at Rome Tiburtina, Rome's 2nd largest train station. I see the fare as 56.50Euro which includes a seat in a 4-person couchette compartment. There is another night train that leaves at midnight but you immediately have to change trains one stop away at Mestre and sit there for 3.0hrs. before proceeding. I'm not sure if the next train is there 3.0hrs early for you to board or you sit in the station for 3.0hrs.
