We are arriving via cruise ship in Livorno on July 17th. We would like to take the train from Livorno to Florence. We want to take the 8:11am train to Florence. Has anyone taken this train? Do I need to make reservations or can I just buy tickets at the station?
So you're going to skip the ship's Pisa and Florence tour run. The 8:11 train is local R (Regionale) train run. Reservations on an R train are not permitted in Italy. These local trains are like your local bus system. You buy your ticket, get on and take any available seat. If no seats, you can stand. The trip takes 1hr.22min. The train will go north and stop in Pisa first but there is no train change.
Larry is right on. Last time on a cruise in Europe I did take the train from Livorno to Florence for the day. Was very easy. Helps to print up a list of return trips beforehand so you know when you will need to catch a train coming back to meet the ship. Taxis are usually readily available from the train station back to the ship. We just got with about 6 others going back to the ship and shared the cost. Just don't forget to validate your train tickets on both ends in the yellow machine near the tracks. Two people didn't from the ship and were fined. Have a great time!
Thanks Larry and Dan for your lessons learned! Is it easy to take get a taxi from the boat to the Livorno train station? Do you know how long it would take to get to the station, then buy the tickets?
