Train Basel ~ Milan ~ Venice

How is food on train? Looks like there is a club car. We will be traveling most of the day so thinking it will be easier just to eat on train (or bring food on).

I did a high speed train from Milan to Venice last year. We had some light snacks like chips and cracker and drinks on board. I don't remember if the car had items like sandwhiches for lunch though.

Basel --> Milan, last time I travelled on it, had a drink-and-sandwich trolley service. It should say on the online timetable (www.sbb.ch) what food service is offered. The trolley changed from a Swiss one to an Italian one at the border (these trolley services are usually concessions). It was noticable that the coffee and food was different on the two trolleys, Swiss food and drink versus Italian.
Milan --> Venice had no trolley.

But, on all long distance trains, the best option is to buy food at a supermarket before you start and have an on-train picnic. this is what everybody does, and if you are lucky you get talking to a local and swap food.

In July I traveled from Rome to Interlaken and ate in the dining car. I had a simple mixed salad and it came with a basket of bread. It really hit the spot. The menu also had other types of main courses that you could choose. I also have done the shop at the grocery store and have a picnic meal on the train. That works also. And sharing you bag a chips with your seat mates is a good conversation starter.

In fact on that trip I brought on something to eat for lunch (mostly snack type items) from the grocery store in Rome Termini and then ate in the dining car for dinner. What ever work for you. Your food choices will depend on what type train you take. An IC or ICE train will have the better dining options.
